Virtual Engagement

Updated: May 6, 2020

In today’s world, it is hard to not discuss the importance of virtual engagement. While any typical school would not consider virtual engagement as an important aspect of the classroom, the last three months have showed the impacts virtual engagement can have on learning. The recent manner of education has completed shifted and the importance of online instruction and the necessity of virtual engagement is more imperative than ever.

Virtual engagement, teaching, and accessibility between families, students, and teachers is a critical part of online learning. It is especially important that all members of the virtual learning environment practice patience, understanding, and empathy during the unprecedented times of the current world. While virtual learning and engagement can be a new territory for many teachers, it is important to remind students that whether face-to-face or not, they are loved and cared for, and their learning and growth is important and noticed.

Ideas for virtual engagement:

1. Virtual show and tell: Whether it be through Zoom, Google Hangout, or a phone call and picture, participating in a class show and tell can connect students to one another, while reminding students that the class is still a family together, just in separate places. This sparks interest and participation in students.

2. Weekly videos: As a teacher, virtual learning can be extremely difficult when students cannot see or hear their classmates or educator. By sending out a weekly video of well-wishes, encouragement, and positivity, students are able to have a pick-me-up during their week. Students can also send videos back, engaging them in their classroom community.

3. Individual check-ins: Most importantly, virtual learning can leave students feeling alone and confused. It is critical that educators regularly check-in with students to ensure they remain on task and reminding them that they are loved and cared for. By checking-in with students, teachers are able to assist in learning and evaluate a student’s well-being, showing a sense of familiarity to the learning environment. This sparks engagement in students.
